The difference between SpotOn GPS Fence & PetSafe® Wireless Fence
The PetSafe Stay & Play® Wireless Fences and Wireless Pet Containment System™ are designed to contain pets in small yards - up to ¾ of an acre. The transmitter creates a circular, wireless boundary from wherever it is placed, and requires a power source. It’s important to note that the transmitter cannot be placed outside; it must be fully indoors (at least 3 feet away from metal objects), in a climate-controlled location where temperatures don’t fall below 10 degrees Fahrenheit or rise above 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
The size of the circular wireless fence can be adjusted to be smaller or larger, but the circular shape cannot be changed. So depending on the shape of your yard, a circular fence may or may not work, as you will need to ensure the fence perimeter - and your dog - are kept safely away from any hazards.
The Stay & Play® Wireless Fences and Wireless Pet Containment Systems all include a PetSafe wireless collar, which is waterproof and battery operated, as well as the transmitter and boundary flags.
These wireless fences are portable if you’re taking it somewhere where the transmitter can be placed inside and plugged in. So moving to a new home works, but taking it to a campground or park does not.
How to set up a PetSafe® Wireless Fence
These systems are easy to set up, and should take about 1-2 hours. The key is to find the right place in your house for the transmitter. The transmitter acts as a base station, emitting a radio frequency ‘fence’ around it, as a circle. The transmitter will communicate with the collar your dog wears to keep your dog inside the boundaries, using audible warning tones and optional static correction. Because the circular fence shape cannot be changed (though the size can), it’s extremely important to ensure the circle does not extend out to a street or any dangerous areas. Given the circular fence shape, pay attention to the diameter measurements per product to pick the right size for your yard. If a circular radius does not work for your property size and/or shape, this is not the right solution to keep your dog safely contained and secure from any streets or other hazards. The different PetSafe® wireless fence products have a maximum containment area of .75 acres, so are not meant for big properties.

For any and all wireless or invisible dog fences, training is required. Whatever system you choose, you must train your dog to the signals (tones, vibrations and/or static correction) depending on the specific system.
