SpotOn Fence Supports Veterans with Operation Delta Dog
In honor of SpotOn's 5th anniversary, we launched the SpotOn Gives Grant program, committing $250,000 to support animal nonprofit organizations across the United States. This initiative allowed us to connect with remarkable groups that are making a significant difference in their communities and for animals in need. One standout organization is Operation Delta Dog, located right in our backyard in Hollis, NH, which received a runner-up grant from SpotOn Gives. As we reflect on our nation's heroes this Veterans Day, we want to shine a light on the vital work they do supporting veterans with service dogs.
Spotlight on Operation Delta Dog
Operation Delta Dog is a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing shelter dogs and training them as service animals for veterans grappling with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), military sexual trauma (MST), and physical challenges like spine injuries. This vital work addresses a critical need: many veterans struggle with invisible wounds that can significantly impact their daily lives. The companionship and support a trained service dog offers can make a profound difference, providing emotional stability and helping veterans regain independence.
A Veteran’s Journey: Scott and His Service Dog, Junie
Take the story of Scott Hyder and his service dog, Junie. A 10-year Army veteran and retired police officer from New Hampshire, Scott faced mental health challenges following his military service. Initially, he was hesitant to embrace the idea of having a service dog. “When you go out into public with a service dog, you're literally putting it out there for everybody to see that you have an issue,” he explains. This sentiment is common among veterans, many of whom fear judgment and stigmatization when acknowledging their struggles.
However, Operation Delta Dog provided Scott with much more than just a service dog; they offered him a comprehensive support system and a community of understanding. The organization not only trains the dogs but also creates a welcoming environment where veterans can connect, share their experiences, and feel supported in their journey toward healing.
Scott’s New Role with Junie
Today, with Junie by his side, Scott has transformed his hesitance into advocacy. He passionately speaks about the incredible work of Operation Delta Dog, emphasizing the dual impact of their mission. Not only are they facilitating healing for veterans who have sacrificed so much for their country, but they are also giving shelter dogs a second chance at life. This symbiotic relationship enriches the lives of both the veterans and the dogs, imbuing their journeys with renewed purpose and meaning.
Honoring Our Heroes on Veterans Day
As we honor our veterans this Veterans Day, it's crucial to recognize organizations like Operation Delta Dog that make a tangible difference in their lives. By supporting this mission, we can help ensure that both veterans and rescue dogs find their way to brighter futures together.
